How to read your score

Sixty-five points lets you lodge an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect. It does not get you invited. For subclass 189 the department invites from the top down within each occupation, and in 2025 and 2026 that meant scores far above the minimum. Subclass 190 adds 5 points and subclass 491 adds 15, and because states select their own candidates, a 75 to 85 point profile with a state-listed occupation is often stronger than a 90 point profile waiting for a 189.

The fastest points to add from India are usually English (proficient to superior is 10 points), a partner's skills assessment (10 points) and completing the years of skilled employment you are close to. Points you claim must be evidenced at application stage, so claim only what your documents prove.

Questions about points

How many points do I need for Australian PR?+

The legal minimum to lodge an Expression of Interest is 65. Invitations for subclass 189 have gone to much higher scores, often 85 to 95. State nomination adds 5 points for 190 and 15 for 491, which is why most Indian applicants target those.

Does CELPIP count for Australian points?+

No. Australia accepts IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge C1 Advanced. CELPIP is a Canadian test and is not accepted for Australian visas.

Can I claim points for my Indian work experience?+

Yes, if it is in your nominated occupation or a closely related one, at the required skill level, within the last ten years, and after you met the skill requirement for the occupation. Three to four years gives 5 points, five to seven gives 10, and eight or more gives 15.

Will the points test change?+

The May 2026 Federal Budget flagged a redesign favouring younger, more highly educated applicants. This calculator carries a version number and will be updated the day a new test takes effect.
